2019 Fantasy Baseball Rankings: 3BSporting News — (Matt Lutovsky)
Look at the top of our 3B rankings. You can make a case for each of the top six as first-round picks. They won't all go in the first round -- nor will they all play third base for their respective fantasy baseball owners -- but it's clear this is a loaded group. Throw in the limitless upside of top prospect Vladimir Guerrero Jr., the potential for big-time bounce backs from guys like Josh Donaldson and Wil Myers, and the allure of young sleepers such as Rafael Devers, Yoan Moncada, and Nick Senzel, and this position is one of the most important on any draft cheat sheet.
One thing you won't find much of at 3B is stolen bases, especially when you factor in that Jose Ramirez, Javier Baez, and Myers are eligible at other positions. It's likely those three will lead all 3B-eligible players in SBs this year, with only Yoan Moncada (if he gains eligibility) also a threat to hit the 20-SB mark. You can make a case that puts a premium on those guys (it's part of the reason we have Myers ranked higher than most sites), but obviously there are plenty of brilliant hitters available at this position.
The toughest player to evaluate is Manny Machado. At only 26 and averaging 35.5 HRs the past four seasons, Machado could have been as high as No. 2 on this list depending on where he signed. Petco Park is by no means a death sentence, but when you couple its spaciousness with Machado's career road splits (.271/.319/.443), it's fair to wonder just how good he'll be for fantasy owners. There's no doubt he's an elite talent, but his fantasy stats might not be.
There are plenty of 3B picks who fall into the "solid and safe" camp, led by Anthony Rendon. Eugenio Suarez, Matt Chapman, and Matt Carpenter also fit the bill. Chances are, most owners will pass on at least the latter three for Guerrero Jr., though. Baseball's top prospect should be up before May, and while there's always risk involved with 20-year-olds who have only played 30 games above Double-A, he's the type of player many will want to gamble on.
It's tough to find many true sleepers at this position. The top 24 or so are all well-known commodities, so it's all about what type of value you can get during your draft. Good players will fall, so don't freak out if you don't get your target early.
