Vote on solar panel project set for Thursday

Jacksonville Journal-Courier, Ill. — Samantha McDaniel-Ogletree Jacksonville Journal-Courier, Ill.

June 30-- Jun. 30--BEARDSTOWN -- The Cass County Zoning Board of Appeals is expected to vote Thursday on the final permits for a solar panel project proposed by Savion Energy.

Savion Energy will be presenting its final project to the Zoning Board of Appeals after its permit previously was approved by the county's plans commission.

The meeting, which will be both online and in person, will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Beardstown High School auditorium, 500 E. 15th St.

It is one of the final steps in the permitting process before construction can begin on the project, Cass County Board President Mike Barnett said.

Courtney Timmons, project developer for Savion, will give a presentation during the meeting and answer questions for both the committee and the public.

"After all the questions are asked, the board will vote to approve or disapprove of the project," Barnett said. "If they approve the application, it'll go to the full county board for approval at our July 13 meeting."

Savion is proposing a $100 million project that will generate roughly 150 megawatts of electricity.

In its public notice June 11 in the Cass County Star-Gazette, Savion said the project will cover roughly 2,382 acres of undeveloped land roughly 4 miles southwest of Beardstown near Edgewood Drive.

Barnett said the public will be able to ask questions after Timmons' presentation.

The meeting will be open to the public, though only 50 people will be allowed to attend the meeting in person. An official from Cass County Health Department will be at the entrance of the auditorium and will be screening people prior to admittance, Barnett said.

"If we have an overflow, they will have to social distance in the lobby, but they will also be able to ask questions," Barnett said.

All those attending in person will be required to wear a mask, Barnett said.

The meeting also will be available online at CassCountyVirtualMeetings.com or by phone by calling 877-229-8493 and entering participant code 119581.

The full project application and site listing is available through the Cass County clerk's office. Comments or letters can be submitted to the zoning enforcement officer 24 hours in advance of the meeting.
